A Sunday Adventure to Sandy Beach

Time simply stops on this walk. Every time I go down to this magical little beach on the banks of the Tay, I lose track of everything! I get lost in the soothing sound of the water and all the wildlife that appears at sporadic points on the way.

Accessed from just outside Guildtown or from Perth Racecourse, this walk can be as long or as short as you would like. At the start of the part we accessed the walk, there is a ruined chapel with a graveyard. It must have been a beautiful little church when it was entrie with lovely views out to the banks above the river.

The paths are fairly good but not suitable for buggies and there can be some very narrow uneven parts that require careful navigation. The path runs in between the banks of the River Tay and the man-made lade which I’m told was to power the bleach mill in the village of Stormontfield. Not far fro mthe start of the walk, there is a fab view of Stanley Mills.

Spring has officialy sprung (despite it being extremeley cold due to the dry cold scandavian air we have over us at the moment) and there are wild spring flowers everywhere! Walking along through the trees on a lovely woodland path, there is wildlife all around. I have spotted salmon, roe deer, a fox, a beaver, various types of birds, red squirrels and a stunning Osprey (who decided he was peckish and would provide me with a fishing demo)!! One is spoilt for choice for wildlife spotting.

The beavers were here!!

Follow the path right the way along over the small man made bridges and small steps will appear off the right. Down these steps is the beautiful Sandy Beach. It’s a really wee beach which is usually quiet and peaceful. Sometimes there are fisherman out in boats which means you need to be careful with how active your pooch is in the water. There was no one there today however, and Mac was able to splash, guddle and dig on the beach until his wee heart’s content. As mentioned, this walk is dog friendly unless there are fisherman about.

I sat and ate my lunch whilst Mac went mad around the beach. It’s so peaceful and relaxing down there. I wasn’t lucky enough to the Osprey today but I didn’t mind.

After a while we set off and walked right the way down to the edges of Stormontfield. We relaxed on the river bank and watched the swifts swoop up and down the river catching flies. If we continued on we would eventually go around the back of Stormontfield and then reach Perth Racecourse, it’s a fab path. Running down the other side of the Tay are the villages of Stanley and Luncarty. This can also be walked too and it’s nice to see Sandy Beach from the otherside of the water (this is the view in the main blog photo).

We headed back to the car after a lovely couple of hours on the banks of the Tay. The closest village to where I am parked is Guildtown. There is a fab Restaurant called The Anglers Inn – they have a fab carvery on a Sunday and A La Carte/Tapas the rest of the week. The staff are very friendly and always happy to see you!

Stewart Towers Dairy – near Murthly, is also not far from here (maybe around 25 minutes drive), they make their own delicious ice cream from their on site dairy. A perfect way to finish off a fab walk!

This is the ideal walk if you like peace and quiet, wildlife and beautiful river views. If you haven’t been to Perthshire yet, please come and fall in love – you will not be dissapointed!
