This weeks adventure was determined by the Drive-It Day organised by the Blairgowrie Rotary Club This is a charity event which has donated to Cancer Research, Children’s Hospice Across Scotland, Alzheimers Scotland, Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance, Rotary Foundation, local causes in the past.  I followed their route after leaving Blairgowrie and went along to Perth Airport. There is a lovely walk here which I know very well as it used to be my daily commute up to work and back from home.

What a fantastic display of cars! They were parked up at the Airport for lunch, this gave me a good opportunity to have a good look around and admire the hard work and dedication of the owners. From Jaguars to Fiats, Porches to Lamborghinis! Some outstanding and immaculately presented machines! Definitely puts me on the mood for the Glamis Scottish Transport Extravangaza in July! If you haven’t been to this event - definitely worth a visit!

After I scratched that petrol head itch that I have, I headed back down past the buildings at the Airport and off in to Highfield Woods. This walk is fab! It can be accessed also from Highfield road in Scone and also down at the A93 near a wee row of cottages called Balboughty Cottages. It’s a great connecting path network as not only does it link Scone to the Airport, but one can walk down to Perth Races and Scone Palace too.

I have walked in these wood in all weathers and seasons and never ever get bored. There has been many changes to the wood over the years. Trees are forested, young ones re planted, new and interesting plants spring to life due to sudden exposure to daylight and seasons add/remove colour all the time. It’s full of life also, whether that be human, canine or wildlife! I have seen birds of prey, roe deer, squirrels and I’m also positive I have seen a Pine Martin too.

This is a very dog friendly walk and I am able to let Mac run around freely for almost the entire walk. The wood is made up from a mixture of firs and pines up the top end of the walk and the further down toward the A93 it changes to a beautiful beech wood. The paths are really good and wide. There are a couple of small inclines but nothing too taxing. I have often run around this wood too as there is plenty of room to pass others walking or running in the wood to.

This walk can be made as long or as short as you like. It is a circuit but can be made longer by de touring off into the wood. Down near the lower end of the wood, lots of trees have been decorated with ribbons and fabric. This area of the wood has been nicknamed ‘Fairy Land - Scone Wood’ - it’s lovely to look at. From here the views are beautiful as the scenery open out to fields below the wood and across to the West. Sunsets are outstanding from this vantage point.
The landscape will soon be changing again as a new road to link the A94 with the A9 will be developed and sadly will be routed through this wood. I’m positive that this wood will adpart to this mighty change and will flourish with nature when the work calms down.

There are many reasons to visit this area - the Airport offers a wide variety of businesses - from learning to fly and Ski-dives to Ian Smith Auctions, health and fitness from Balans Studio to getting your perfect do at Adele Key the Hairdresser. After exploring the Airport, there is the stunning Scone Palace which hosts many fab events (such as Rewind, The Scottish Game Fair and Spirits of Scone to name a few) as well as opening its doors to the public to see round the Palace itself. Along the A93 from the Palace is Perth Races who have many fixtures throughout the Racing Season.

In regards to refreshment, The Lodge at the racecourse itself provides a tasty meal,  Scone Arms by all accounts provides lovely food as does the new Italian Wine Bar in Scone. There is also Tesco and Coop plus a Fish and Chip Shop and Baker. One is spoiled for choice.

We have some fab holiday lets in the area which are very close by to these fab places! If your coming for an event - our lovely properties maybe just for you. Check out all available self catering accommdation here
