Scotland in Winter

Scotland might not be a beach resort climate, but the country does not shy away from events during the colder months of the year. So put on your hats and scarves and head out into Scotlands winter activities to keep you distracted from the fact that you can see your breath.

1. Edinburgh Christmas and New Year

Edinburgh Christmas Festive Market Silent Night Lights

It wouldn't be a correct list if we left Edinburgh out, so we have listed it first. Edinburgh Christmas is iconic and there is plenty to fill your day, with a market that stretches the length of Princes Street, Ice Skating at St Andrew's Square, and the Night Lights along George Street that is free for all. The capital never fails to delight at New Year either with the classic street party and firework display from Edinburgh Castle, the night will be over before you know it so get involved!

2. St Andrew's Day

A national bank holiday in Scotland, St Andrew's Day is a day of celebrating Scottish culture. The national day falls on 30th November and also marks the beginning of traditional advent. If you're heading to St Andrew's, the place, around this date, then you can enjoy a week-long celebration of the patron saint.

3. Glasgow rival market

Glasgow Christmas Market St Enoch Sloans

Not as long established as the capital's equivalent, Glasgow also has a festive market that is a wonderful addition to a day in the city. Spend the day doing some shopping and take a wander along the stalls sitting out. You can pick up some unique presents and treat yourself to some German sausage and churros (to share of course).

4. Highland Walks

If a big scale party isn't your thing and you would much rather relax at a slower pace, then all of the scenic walks you checked out in summer will now have a magical dusting of snow that makes them impossibly captivating. Head up to Highland Perthshire and take in the views from The Hermitage walk at Dunkeld, or stay in Perth City and take a stroll up Kinnoull Hill to catch the winter sunset over the city centre – just be sure to make your way down before it gets too dark!

5. Perth Culture

Perth Theatre Concert Hall Horsecross

Catch some culture in Perth this season. Pitlochry Theatre is well-known for producing excellent shows such as Chicago and The Wizard of Oz, you can even make a day of it and stroll around the peaceful town of Pitlochry and get something to eat before your show is due to start. If you don't want to venture too far from the city centre streets, then Perth Concert Hall puts on an annual pantomime that is perfect entertainment for the whole family. Not to forget the recently refurbished Perth Theatre which has a variety of shows all year round.
